50 days of stupidity – Day 14
- How could the complexity of the human mind possibly evolve on its own accord out of mindless cells? Where does our consciousness come from?
Alright we get it, you have a difficult time comprehending processes that happen over millions or billions of years. I’ve already address evolution in Day 13, however, that last question is worth taking a poke at.
Often, when arguing with a theist or ID proponent (haha, like they are ever not a package deal), I get accused of answering a question with a question. This is because the question is often nonsensical and rather than attempt to ask a nonsense question, it is easier to illustrate why the question is “wrong”.
Asking “Where does our consciousness come from?” is just like asking “Where does work come from?” There is no well where work comes out, work isn’t a “thing”, it is the result of force being applied to an object. Consciousness is like this. There isn’t a “thing” called a conscious. Our conscious is the result of our brains ability to gather information from all of our sensing abilities and process that information. So the simple answer to her question is “our brain” but it is more important that it be made clear that it is a process of the brain and not something physical or spiritual or what ever mumbo-jumbo you want to call it that “lives” somewhere in the brain.
